
About Sebastian
Colombian-born conductor Sebastián Almánzar was initially trained as a chorister and choirmaster. In June 2024, he was selected as one of the four active participants in the Ammodo Masterclass with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, working under Paavo Järvi.
In December 2024, he made his debut with the Royal Danish Opera and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, leading a production of Tchaikovsky´s Nutcracker.
Earlier in the season, he served as Assistant Conductor to Marie Jacquot with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Euskadiko Orchestra, as well as to Marta GardoliÅ„ska at the Lorraine National Opera, working on Haydn’s The Creation.
In 2025, he was selected as one of the 8 semifinalists of the prestigious Herbert von Karajan Young Conductors Award, organized by the Salzburg Festival, conducting the Österreichisches Ensemble für Neue Musik and the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg.In 2020, he won 2nd Prize at the European Union Conducting Competition in Bulgaria, returning as guest conductor of the Pazardzhik Symphony Orchestra.
He has Sebastian has conducted orchestras such as the Royal Danish Opera, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, Spanish National Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, RSO Wien, The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Medellín Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Iberacademy Orchestra, among others.
Sebastian has participated in masterclasses with renowned conductors including Marin Alsop, Roberto, Paavo Järvi, Roberto González-Monjas, and Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
Born in Medellín, Colombia, Sebastián is fluent in Spanish, English, and German. He holds a Master’s degree in Conducting from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and is currently pursuing a postgraduate degree under Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
